Voluntary Restraint
Accepting restraint is a very important thing to reach our birds. It helps keep stress down during handling when needing for restraint like going to the vet or trimming nails and beaks. It also can help when giving medications when your bird is not trained to accept the syringe voluntarily.
Stress can be deadly to our birds, especially the smaller birds or older birds. I unfortunately had this happen to myself with my bird Gus almost a year ago when I wasn’t allowed in the vets (virus causing issues) to use our training and restrain him properly. He passed away from a stroke most likely caused by stress. It was a situation that left me heart broken and my vet heartbroken for me, as it was nothing he directly did, just the world we lived in at that time with restrictions in place.
Reducing fear by restraint training means it’s less likely for your bird to be pushed over threshold when needing to be restrained. A proper training plan working in small approximations should be used to be sure not to stress your bird out at all while training.
