Pair Bonding Doesn't Mean Aggression

Bonded pairs does not always mean aggression or they don’t want anything to do with you. Some pair bonding behaviors and pairs can be this way, but most are still manageable and still want to be apart of your life! Even Jo (yellow nape amazon) and Ringo (orange wing amazon) who are pair bonded with aggressive tendencies and pasts, they will still hangout with me and not be aggressive.

Pair bonding behaviors isn’t determined by the species or gender of the pairs (same sex or different). It’s about the individual birds.

There is training that can be done to decrease pair bonding behaviors and modifications to our approach and how we interact with them to make them still successful companions. I like pairing birds of the same sex because no babies and also birds scientifically do better in pairs. I find my birds are happier because they get socialization and reduced isolation when I am not spending time with them.

Of course, not all parrots can be paired. Due to universal breeding practices, it sets the birds up to not learn proper socialization between parrots. Breeders will not allow the babies to be parent raised and will pull them when they’re extremely young to be “hand reared” so they’re “more tame to people.” Doing this means they miss out on interactions with siblings and their parents teaching them communication between other birds. It’s like taking a puppy too young from mom, it often leads to social development stunts and antisocial tendencies. Also, hand rearing has no guarantee that the bird will be friendly and social like breeders will claim. Hand resting is they get fed by a syringe not they they get interacted with beyond that.

There is a lot of success with duel raising parrots, so allowing parrot parents to raise their young while human supplementation is given to ensure the babies are getting taken care of and socialized from a young age. It’s a newer practice and you won’t find it many places, but birds raised this way have more success socializing with other parrots while still being used to human interaction. It also keeps babies in the breeders care for longer, which some people want a very young baby thinking that it will be friendlier which also isn’t always true
