Fans are Deadly

Fans make really fun toys for birds! It’s a perch, something to chew, and it has these fun little things that dangle down and hit them in the face when they swing them. But fans are dangerous for our birds.

This fan does not work. It’s there because it was easier when I moved in to put another fan up than a different fixture, but it has never been used before.

Fans are known to cause injury and death. It is not uncommon for birds to fly into fan blades. Even clipped birds are known to fly into fans for different reasons. It’s also easy to forget that your bird might be perched on a fan and turn it on.

I always tell people that if a cage is open, a bird is out (even if it is in the other room), and no matter if your bird is clipped or not, a fan should not be on unless the bird is safely secured inside a cage. This will eliminate risk of injury or death by 100%!

Never say “not my bird.” Plan for accidents and incidents, prevent them from happening. It’s our job as caretakers to keep the animals in our lives safe, even if it is inconvenient for us. They didn’t ask to be in captivity and live in our homes, so it’s our job to give them the best care and keep them as safe as possible inside our dangerous homes
