How to Prevent Your Bird Flying Off Outside

These warmer days has be excited for warmer weather… until it is ruined the next day with 30 degree weather.

But as the weather gets warmer, that means there will be more windows open, more going outside, and an increased chance in your bird flying off. Don’t let your ego take over common sense, your bird will fly off is startled, picked up by the wind, or if they find something desirable.

Never let you bird outside without the proper outdoor recall training, a harness, or in a secure carrier with a double locking system. Yes, clipped birds can still fly. Clipping doesn’t stop a bird from flying off. If a wing gust comes, it will take your clipped bird up, and they won’t have the ability to fly back down to you, making it harder to recover your bird.

Harness training is difficult for a lot of caretakers because it’s an advanced skill for your bird to learn. It’s a lot of behaviors involved to just put on the harness. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible to train! If your bird did not react well to the harness the first time you tried, don’t give up! Your bird just needs more training to accept it!
