Methods to Keep Your Bird Safe Outdoors

As the weather is warming up, we need to be sure our trips outdoors with our birds is safe for them. A wing clip does not ensure no fly off. Having your bird be desensitized to loud, sudden noises doesn’t not ensure no fly off. Having your bird be free flight trained does not ensure no fly off. Your bird never flies does not ensure no fly off.

There are two ways to ensure your bird will not fly off.
1) put your bird in a secure aviary, cage, or travel cage outside with sufficient locks. I say sufficient locks because some birds love to pick locks and you will need to double up on locks. It’s always in good practice to never leave your bird unattended in aviaries, especially at the start, to ensure they cannot get out, and nothing can get in

2) a harness. A harness with a leash is a great way to be able to fly your parrot (especially when you use a way to extend the leash. I like using retractable dog leashes because they’re lightweight and are long), bring your parrot along with you, while keeping your bird safe. Your parrot should never chew on the harness, and chewing is likely because it was not trained properly. Harness training is an advanced behavior because it puts together so many other behaviors that need to be learned first.

I do have online training to go over how to properly train the harness for any sizes parrot if you’re interested in harness training! Feel free to contact us to set up a harness training consultation!
