Behavioral Problems Stemming From Unmet Needs

Most bird behavioral issues stem from unmet needs. Body language not being understood or respected (not being listened to), poor diet, too small of a cage, not enough mental stimulation, too much down time… the list goes on and on.

We can be so quick to blame the bird because we may not know what we are doing wrong, which is completely normal! We all do everything that we can and know to do for our birds. Continuing your education to make positive changes is important! I am always improving. With most clients I meet with, I go over these things and their jaws drop! “That makes perfect sense,” “I had no idea!” “Who knew the solution was so simple?” Once changes are made, behavior changes as well!

Parrots are horribly difficult animals to have in our homes successfully. I get comments from people who know better, and they’ll say they’re so easy cause they live in a cage, give them food and water, and you’re good. I want everyone to focus on the word “successfully” cause that is not successful treatment and care of a bird. They need so much, especially cockatoos who are the hardest species to have in our homes, that becomes a full time job that is incredibly expensive.

Parrots are highly intelligent creatures with complex needs. If you put in the demanding work, you will be able to successfully care for them in our homes. It’s not ideal and never what the bird really needs. I do not believe most species should be in our homes. But, there are thousands in rescues needing homes that can still live great lives when we provide them what they need. So, do not support the pet trade, rather, let’s clean up what we already have a living in captive care that cannot be released.
