Clean Your Bird's Bowls!

Birds will often like to take their pellets and soak them in water. This is likely because the pellets or freeze dried ingredients are super drying and they are trying to add moisture to their food.

This means it’s very important for caretakers to clean water and food bowls often. Water bowls are a excellent breeding ground for bacteria, especially when food is left in it or the water is left in too long. This can make your bird extremely sick, especially due to how sensitive parrots are.

It’s recommended to wash your bowls every day at least once a day for your bird. This means throwing them in the dish water or going over them with a sponge and nontoxic dish soap.

Circular stainless steels bowls are the most hygienic. Square bowls found in inexpensive small cages will easily harbor more bacteria and buildup in the covers due to the sponges inability to clean well in those areas without a bit of elbow grease or specific cleaning sponges. The circular shape allows us to easily clean every inch of the bowls surface without missing.

Stainless steel is also better than plastic because steel is a nonporous material, so bacteria will stay on the surface and can be easily wiped off. Plastic is porous which can make it harder to ensure a perfect clean. Some plastic bowls, especially for pets, contain BPA that can become a huge vet bill quick!

If you have plastic dishes and want to convert, but your cage is not equipped to hold a circular bowl, you can always purchase bowl sets with a screw on base that you can attach to the bars like a perch and put them anywhere!
