Bird Swapping

I got a message I have heard all too often. Boo (moluccan cockatoo) previous owners asked if we knew of any rescues around that adopt “nicer” birds because they want to get another. Two days after they rehomed their “vicious” bird, they want a “nice” bird.

Listen buddy, it’s you, not the birds. Boo is proof.

I’ve heard this ALL THE TIME while working at rescues full time. People would come in wanting to “swap” birds, so the rescue would take in their “mean” bird and they would take one of our “nice” birds. Of course, the answer was always no that they could relinquish their bird, but not be able to adopt from us under those circumstances.

If you’re not willing to work with your bird, you have no right to go out and get another that is “nicer” in replacement of your “mean” bird. Work with it. Gain knowledge on the bird in front of you. Make bonds, make progress, problem solve. That is what it means to share your life with a companion animal. Animals are not just here for our enjoyment, they are living creatures that deserve respect.

If you are wanting to do more for your bird and form that connection and work through behavioral concerns, feel free to contact us for an online consultation and training services.
