Disease Testing Your Bird's

I went over to disease test Merlin (blue and gold macaw) last night. Disease testing a bird while in quarantine or before accepted into your care is a MUST before you take on and in another bird. Parrots can hold diseases that can be quickly and easily spread to other parrots as well to humans. Birds can be carriers of these diseases without showing symptoms. Even if the bird is the only bird in the home, the bird can still have these diseases. These diseases are deadly to parrots, and can be deadly to us as well if not treated.

So, always disease test as well as have a full blood panel draw up before ANY bird is accepted into your house, as well as a 30 day proper quarantine before being exposed to other birds.

Disease testing is cheap and easy to do at home. It never costs me more than $75 for disease testing and DNA sext. No need to go to the vet! All you need is the cards and swabs to put samples on from the company and nail clippers! I do advise you to go to the vet if you are uneducated or not confident in doing the testing yourself. To find a good avian vet, read our blog post here.

The disease testing company that I use is Animal Genetics. All of my birds are sex tested, and tested in psittacosis, PBFD, Bornavirus, and Pacheos.
