Cockatoos Are Hard Companions

Cockatoos are one of the loudest parrots you can have in your home. Not only are they more prone naturally to screaming, but specific species, like Alfie a Moluccan cockatoo, are the loudest parrots on earth. Moluccan cockatoos are known to get to the same decimal level as jet engines. So, you all can quickly realize why I wear my headphones so much.

Cockatoos can be a lot of fun, but majority of people cannot handle the noise. They get these birds because there are fun videos like this one, and they do not realize that this cuteness only happens maybe 5% of the day. The rest of the day is trying to keep them mentally stimulated (cockatoos need an abundance of mental stimulation everyday), dealing with the screaming, cleaning up big messes, and of course battling cockatoo feather down (dust) that will coat everything and can cause major life threatening lug conditions in humans, and in some other birds.

Cockatoos are the number one rehomed bird... that statistic is pointed out for a reason. Most people can’t handle life with a cockatoo, but they could easily handle life with another parrot, or multiple. They’re challenging. Before you decide to bring a cockatoo into your family, please do extensive research, ask people who have cockatoo experience, and volunteer at a rescue near you working with cockatoos to determine if they fit your lifestyle. Fostering to adopt is also a good way to start with your first cockatoo.
