Small Birds Are Underrated!

There is an understatement on smaller parrots. Everyone thinks you need to have a big bird to have a bird. Everyone wants to go big. When in reality, smaller birds are the better option for our homes.

First, they’re quieter than larger parrots, even conures. A sun conure, one of the loudest of the conures, has a decimal reach to 110. A Moluccan cockatoo is 145, a macaw is about 130. This means less hearing damage and more flexibility to the home you can live in. Most apartments and townhomes won’t allow a medium or large sized bird in because of the noise.

They’re less expensive. They’re smaller so they consume less food. Their toys are smaller and are also less expensive.

It takes less time to clean their cages. Bird bird poop is like cement, especially macaws. Smaller bird poop is much easier to clean off, even when dried.

There is no difference in ability to form a bond, have a personality, and do everything the big birds do. In fact, a conure is known to be a mini macaw. They’re very closely related. It’s common to put conures and mini macaws, like a hans, in the same aviary because they’re so similar they do fantastic together. Little birds can still talk, learn tricks, fly (arguable better flying in our homes than a macaw with a 4FT wing span and safer), be harness trained, and much more.

I feel like a bigger bird is like a status thing showing your experience, leading many inexperienced people to get a big bird to have that notoriety and quickly realizing they’re in over their heads. People want a WOW factor, but don’t understand the intensity and work that comes with larger birds. I’m the biggest fan of small birds for the average home. You don’t need size to be a wow factor. Give the little dudes a chance!
