Bird's Lunging at Each Other

For those who don’t know flock dynamics, the lunging is not always a concern. Lunging is a way of communication between birds. It’s “get away... or else” it shows they’re ready to fight to defend, but want to give a warning first. Maui, my sun conure, listens before a bird touches her, which means no harm in it. There are birds in flocks who get bossed around. Does that mean she’s unhappy? Absolutely not. Maui actually prefers to hangout with the flock. When I take her out and no one else, she flies back inside the aviary to be with them. She still cuddles with Rosie (pineapple green cheek conure), she just prefers to not fight and just listen to what everyone else says.

Bird communication, like a lot of other species, can look intense sometimes. But it is a way of communicating between each other, setting boundaries, and the birds getting to know each other. Never would I let my birds fight or harm each other, but I will always allow them to effectively communicate in their own ways to each other. That’s a big reason why my flocks are so successful. I let them communicate and not play ref all the time. Let the birds be birds, but always keep them safe!
