Older Parrots Are the Best

That’s the great thing about senior birds. I personally prefer seniors and older birds because they are more mellow, they are usually less needy, and they are usually just happy to be doing whatever! Another great thing is their life span. I know for sure Rukkas (red lored amazon) will not outlive me; she is 100% in her forever home. But, when it comes to Alfie (moluccan cockatoo) who is 24 (almost 25), he may still outlive me, a 21 year old.

A lot of people get birds, but don’t think about the very long term with them. When we have kids, they can move out and be independent. Birds live just as long as people in most cases and can’t just move out and live on their owns. It’s a lifelong commitment.

Getting an older bird means you get all those years together without the stress of the bird will outlive me.

Yes they sometimes have a bit more medical concerns, like my Rukkas, but most don’t! Some may have behavioral concerns, but at any age, behavior can be modified! All are very easily managed, and most of the time aren’t terribly more expensive.

Unlike other senior pets that may just live another year, generally most senior birds still will have more than 5 years to them (Rukkas has at least another 15 kicking in her even at being over 50)! So, it isn’t the I’ll get attached and they’ll be gone too quickly situations (generally speaking, every bird is an individual though).

So, next time you think about getting a young bird that will outlive you, see if your home would be a good fit for a lovely senior. You may strike gold like I did with my Rukkas!
