You might have heard a lot of fancy buzz words…

around the avian community within the last few years, specifically the words “enrichment” and “foraging.” If you have been following our work for some time, or have been a client of ours, you would have also heard these words. We have even done an entire webinar just explaining these concepts that can be found here.

These concepts are ones that every parrot caretaker should know and utilize daily in order to meet their parrots needs and help them cope with captive life. Enrichment is simply defined as the modification of an animal’s environment to increase the environmental complexity to improve biological functioning (National Association for Interpretation, 2009). Foraging is simply the act of the animal finding food within their enrichment.

Foraging is used to enhance exploration and increase the animal’s personality, which is why we recommend it for animals who have a history of abuse and neglect, and for animals who are overall shy and fearful. It is also a known aid in decrease feather destructive behaviors like plucking and barbering. It is also a great tool to use in decreasing chronic screaming with all species, including cockatoos and macaws.

It also is a more natural way of feeding. It takes up more time of a bird’s day, decreasing the occurrence of them being able to rehearse undesirable behaviors including pacing, destroying, and breaking out of their cage, and even rehearsing hormonal behaviors. In the wild, birds will forage for their food for over 8 hours a day. In our care, they will eat anywhere from 30-90 minutes per day.

Offering foraging can also increase movement and activity, which can decrease pressure sores and help birds lose weight and gain muscle mass. All of this, and so many more benefits.

So, how do you do it?
